Setting Sail on a Plan That Wasn’t the Plan

Map Stamp: Athens, Greece — Launch Point
Case File Opener: Assignment: Romance cruise from Greece to Croatia. Status: Mission pivoted to Girls’ Trip due to unforeseen “I can’t make it” announcement. Partner in crime: my girlfriend.
The Plan That Changed
Some trips start with champagne toasts and “couple selfies” on the balcony. Mine started with a last-minute change in cast.
I’d planned this Greece-to-Croatia cruise for two years. In my mind, it was going to be hand-in-hand strolls through sunlit cobblestone streets, stolen kisses on balconies, and maybe even a sunset or two that made us feel like the only people on Earth.
But the universe had a plot twist: my intended travel companion told me—kinda late in the game—that he couldn’t make it.
This wasn’t heartbreak. No drama, no tears. Just one of those “Really? You waited until now to tell me?” moments. Luckily, I don’t waste a perfectly good cruise. Enter my girlfriend—the kind of ride-or-die who knows when to pass the sunscreen and when to hand you a cocktail.

Athens: Starting Smart, Not Stressed
I arrived in Athens a few days early because I wasn’t about to let a flight delay or—my personal Greek nightmare—a taxi strike ruin my trip. I wanted to start in peace, not panic.
My girlfriend wasn’t so lucky. She arrived frazzled and jetlagged, while I was already sipping Greek coffee and plotting our route.

The Airbnb was technically “non-smoking.” In reality, the neighbors smoked like it was their second job. Within a day, my sinuses staged a full rebellion. By Day 2, I had post-nasal drip. By the time we boarded the ship, I was hosting bronchitis like an uninvited guest.
“The good news? I’m a professional at finding joy in the middle of mess. The bad news? My first mission wasn’t sightseeing — it was tracking down cold medicine.”
Still Magic, Even With a Cough
European pharmacies don’t play. You don’t just grab NyQuil off the shelf—you tell your life story to the pharmacist, and they decide your fate. I left stocked with cold medicine, Vitamin C, and the tiniest sliver of hope.
Even coughing into my elbow like a considerate pandemic survivor, stepping onto the ship was magic. Athens slipped behind us, and ahead lay whitewashed villages, ancient ruins, and at least one drink with a tiny umbrella.
Bronchitis or not, I promised myself: I was going to make this trip count.
